I can’t believe how much has changed over the past few years. I fondly recall talking with Cristian, while we were dating, about his goal of becoming a professional photographer someday. Next thing I knew we had a five year old daughter, Cony, and a newborn baby born, Luis, but our family grew in a whole different way on September 1^st, 2006. Cristian and I were finally making our dreams a reality by starting our company, Escudero Photography.

After getting our business license on September 1^st, we started off small, like most businesses do. The first few years we worked from our home, which was great as a new mom with another baby boy, Juan Pablo, on the way. Cristian and I took our time learning new skills through taking courses online, DVDs, books, magazines, and even on location. We began developing our website and booking a few weddings and portrait sessions here and there. I remember back then I was so excited to photograph 1 or 2 weddings a month, while nowadays we currently average 3 to 4 events per weekend and do studio portraits during the week. So much has changed since we began. This is most apparent to me when I look at portraits of our children throughout the years. Not only have our children grown up, but our photography skills have developed as well.

It hasn’t been easy building our business but it has always been exciting. Working with my husband has been enlightening and rewarding. While we both have a passion and talent for photography, we’ve discovered that I have a knack for managing the business on a daily basis and that Cristian’s asset is his creativity. Cristian is always willing to take a risk on a new idea. It reminds me of the night we photographed a wedding at the Christiana Hilton. Cristian saw a photo booth at the reception and he did not stop talking about it during the event. By the end of the night, he had it set in his mind that we would expand our photography business into the world of photo booths. I was quite skeptical and found the photo booth pictures to be silly, which was the opposite direction I wanted our company to go. Portraits and photography were supposed to be professional and serious! Next thing I knew, we had a couple booths built, were booking weddings right and left, and even hired subcontracted employees to work for us. For once, I was so glad that I was wrong.

We are so blessed in these stressful economic times to have established a business that is prosperous and still growing. We are coming up on two years in our storefront studio in Clayton and we are so thankful for everyone who has supported us along the way. Without this support, Escudero Photography would not be here today.
